Future of Energy Dinks

What is the future of Energy Drinks? Is there room for the small player to compete with Rockstar, Redbull, Monster, Coca Cola and Pepsi Energy Drinks?

Energy Drinks are still going strong. Growing up to 50% every year and going after new countries like Mexico. The problem is that most of that growth is in the large companies listed above. The small players or start-ups are not growing like the big companies. It is now harder for the small companies to compete in traditional markets like convenience stores or supermarkets.

What can you do? Find a niche. Maybe MLM sales, or natural stores, think of something different instead of pounding your head against the big boys with millions in their budget.

Your New Energy Drink makes you a target

Once everyone in your town finds out you have an Energy Drink you’ll be the most popular game in town. You’ll get calls from newspapers, magazines, and especially radio stations, all looking for advertising. Not to mention all the requests for sponsorship you’ll get. What to do? Nothing, don’t do a thing until you know how much you’ll get for your investment in promotions. Don’t spend anything without distribution; don’t spend a dime without knowing your Return On Investment.

Don’t fall into the Energy Drink Promotion Trap. Remember my rule “No promotion without distribution”. You do promotion to get the product on the shelves or because you already have product on the shelves. Use promotions as “The Deal”; giving sampling or other events to your distributors or retailers when they buy into your drink.

Thank You

300 Energy Drinks hit the market.. How to sell your own

continued...

The Energy Drink Business is still a great business to get into; more than 300 new Energy Drinks hit the US market last year. If you plan on going into this business do your research first. Focus your research on sales, marketing and distribution. Yes, positioning is a lot of fun, promotion and formulation are fun also, but getting money in the bank from sales is even more fun. You are not getting any money unless you make a lot of calls and sell a lot of product. So focus your research on sales and distribution.

Promotions are a large part of Energy Drinks and it makes them very exciting. You have parties, club events, games, sponsorships, fun, fun and more fun. Now, the real question here is How much will you get for your promotions? Notice I don’t ask how much you’ll spend in promotions but how much you’ll get back. Please, please don’t spend a dime without a plan to get it back in sales.

What’s happening with Energy Drink Sales?

Continued...

The beverage bottling companies and ingredient suppliers are getting tougher; they require higher production minimums and sometimes even a retainer to get started. Production prices are a bit higher now and distributors; well they are saturated with calls from people trying to sell them energy drinks.

What can you do to compete? What can you do to get more energy drink sales? Easy, the answer is support. If you have better support you’ll have more sales.

So what kind of support do you need to get the best distributors and the best retailers to carry your product? You need two basic things, you need Bodies and you need Deals.

Your Bodies are people on the ground, opening accounts for your distributors and helping retailers sell products. Your bodies will visit accounts, open accounts, merchandise, place racks, point of sale material and sell. Your deals are what you give your retailers on the spot for taking your product. It can be a special price, it can be a refrigerator, sampling event, something. Just remember this, nobody cars if you have the best looking best tasting product. They care how much you’ll sell for them.

Are Energy Drinks Sales Still Growing?

Are Energy Drinks Growing at the same rate as they did 5 years ago or 3 years ago? No, they are not. They are still growing fantastically but not as much as they did back then. The stakes are now high, more companies are acquired, and more entrepreneurs are getting the funding and then the big pay day of an acquisition. So sales are vicious at the convenience store level. More Energy Drinks are competing for the same space on the shelve or refrigerator, and the big boys like Coca Cola, Pepsi, Rockstar, Monster and Redbul are fighting back and getting for shelf space of their own.

I still get more calls about Energy Drinks than all beverages put together. I get calls from distributors looking for them from manufacturers trying to sell them and from entrepreneurs looking to start their own brand.

Energy Drink Sales Review for 2007

Energy Drinks Continue to Grow in the New Age Beverage Category

Energy Drinks where growing at up to 75% per year just a couple of years ago. The Energy Drink growth has slowed down a bit to 12% per year according to Market Research Group, LLC, a beverage research firm. This is not necessarily bad and it’s a normal adoption curve correction. The New Age category as a whole is still growing at about 50% per year with such products as high end water, sports drinks, vitamin water, teas and other new beverages.

According to Market Research Group, the energy drink category has grown by 440% since 2002 to a whopping $6.6 Billion in 2007 and is expected to reach $9 billion in 2011. This is going on while other beverage categories like soda are at a stand still.

Growth in the mass grocery and pharmacy stores was down from 54% in 2005 to 34% in 2007 according to Information Resources Inc. This is a normal drop as energy drinks sold in these stores have been the same ones for several years without any new large players entering the market.

All of this information can be tricky to digest. You see, much of the research is done through scan data at supermarkets and other times at convenience stores. I personally look at all the scanned data from every source and then call the manufacturers to check their sales growth numbers.

Personally, I got 1,150 inquiries so far this year just from people wanting to start and Energy Drink. Plus another 500 or so that wanted so start a New Age Beverage. This gives you an idea of the amount of products coming into the market.

So is there still an opportunity. Well, yes, there is an opportunity worth $9 billion. The only thing that changed is that the existing companies are getting smarter in blocking new competition from start-ups, so just bottling an energy drink and spending a few thousand dollars in advertising is not enough. You have to concentrate on sales and distribution.

Not only sales and distribution, but your beverage portfolio has to be an important part of your strategy. Don’t be a one drink company. Learn from Hansen’s, Rockstar, Vitaminwater, Jones Soda, and create a solid beverage portfolio.

My final advice, Build a Beverage Portfolio, sell much more than just energy drinks, focus your strategy around sales and distribution, get more funding, you will need it to compete with the big boys as they are trying to block new players.

Jorge Olson

Energy Drink Business

The Energy Drink Business Category is still growing strong. Projected to grow 12% next near and reach a whopping 9 Billion by 2011. The New Age Category including functional beverages, vitamin waters, sports drinks and high end water is growing at 50% per year.

This means there is a tremendous opportunity in the category. Although you now have to change sales strategies, broaden your beverage portfolio and be more aggressive in your distribution channels.

Start your private label energy drink

How do you start your private label energy drink?

Simple, you just follow 3 easy steps

1. Create your concept. Why are you different? And please don’t tell me because your drink tastes better. Do you have a unique selling proposition? Is it a new package?

2. Start on your distribution and retailing strategy. Landing distributor is the easy part. Anyone with a few bucks can get good distribution. The real question is how will you support them? How will you help them sell off the shelves? To learn this you better have some distribution experience or hire someone who does. Learn from your distributors, go on drive along with them, let them teach you, don’t try to teach them. And remember, if you see your distributors like a logistics company you will not go wrong. If you see them as your sales force you are in for a big disappointment.

3. Now you are ready to produce your drink. This is the easy part. Whether you use cans or bottles will depend on you investment. For cans you need more, for bottles less, but there are some trade-offs here as well.

If you are ready to start your energy drink or new age beverage send me a note to see how we can work together at www.LiquidBrandsManagement.com

if you are just curious about the industry we have a beverage package that answers all your questions like how to get started, how much it costs to produce, and everything you need to get started. Find the “Beverage Package” at www.BeverageIncubator.com

Energy Drinks Sales - No promotion without Distribution

Energy Drinks Sales and Promotions

Today I had another meeting about promotions. How to spend money in promotions, how to establish a budget, where to spend the money.

Energy Drinks attract a lot of promotional opportunities. It’s just the nature of the product. Not only that, it’s the easiest thing to do, spend money…

Now, remember, no promotion without distribution. Don’t even think about spending time or money in promotions without tying it to distribution and sales. No advertising, no sampling, no sponsoring, no special events without sales or distribution. This is not a chicken or egg question. You absolutely need to have sales and distribution before spending money in promotions.

So don’t worry anymore about it. Worry about getting sales and more sales. You can tie your promotional campaigns to sales.

Are Energy Drinks going healthy?

Healthy Energy Drinks? Is it possible?

Are Energy Drinks going healthy?

Well, in one word, YES.

Now, will they do a big splash or stay as small players? Read on…

The new trend in food and beverages is Healthy Alternatives. We see it in specialty stores like Whole Foods and Organic food and drinks.

Now we see it more and more in beverages, and yes, they made their way up to Energy Drinks.

New companies are developing new organic, sugar free, caffeine free, no taurine, healthier alternatives. Will the market follow? We’ll see!!!

These healthier drinks have an advantage and disadvantage from a purely MARKETING perspective.

Marketing Advantage:
-Capture older, healthier crowd
-Capture woman, who make a minority of Energy Drinkers at about 30%
-Sell more at supermarkets. Traditionally this category sells much better at convenience stores

Marketing Disadvantage:

-The majority of Energy Drinkers don’t care much about healthier alternatives… they are too young!
-Sugar Free and other healthy Energy Drink line extensions account for about 10% of total sales of a leading brand
-Not big enough pool of distributors or retailers willing to give up shelve space to try these new products

In my opinion, there is a future for the healthy energy drink. It will not be main stream now, but when all the “x gamers” and “y generation” energy drinkers grow up they will like to keep energy drinks, maybe in a healthier way. This is when they will make a big splash. The better positioned energy drinks will survive.

Thanks again,

Jorge Olson
